Visayan Girl. Photograph by the Gerhard Sisters, 1904. Gerhard Sisters "Aborginal Portraits". Missouri Historical Society Photographs and Prints Collections. NS 28104. Scan © 2003, Missouri Historical Society.
DESCRIPTION
Considered the most Westernized of the Philippine peoples, the Visayan contingent numbered 98 men, women, and children. They represented the most “civilized” group of the native population, in part due to their Roman Catholic faith. Admired in press notices at the time for their beauty, modest dress, and serene and industrious character, the women performed musical and theatrical concerts, often playing the U.S. National Anthem. Visitors also watched the women work on weaving pineapple silk and basket making.
