DESCRIPTION
Almost 80 years old, rather than 60 as the title implies, the Apache Chief drew crowds at the Fair because of his status as a warrior Indian. Actually a prisoner of war in 1904, a special government dispensation was made to allow his presence on the fairgrounds. Organizers gave Geronimo free transportation to and from the Fair, food, and an opportunity to sell his autograph and handmade bows and arrows to visitors. He also spent his time singing Apache war songs. Geronimo became a symbol of a conquered and domesticated American Indian.
