DESCRIPTION
Designed to give fairgoers a taste of “authentic” Japanese culture, a group of twenty Geisha Girls worked at both the Fair Japan on the Pike and the Japanese Village. The women were divided into two classes: the novices, or Oskaku, and the full Geishas, who had completed an extensive course in Geisha graces. Their principal roles were to serve tea in the Tea Houses and dance to the rhythm of drums, mandolins, and other Japanese instruments while dressed in colored silk kimonos.
