Mor Thiam at the 1966 Festival of Arts in Senegal, performing "Tambourinaire Sénégalais."
Hailing from Dakar, Senegal, Mor Thiam is a legendary percussionist and jazz musician.
He was encouraged to come to the United States after Katherine Dunham discovered him
playing in 1968 at an arts festival in Senegal. Thiam worked as the musical director for the
Dunham Center in East St. Louis for 16 years.
