The 1904 Olympics
Loving Cup Won by S. S. Jones
<< Previous
Awarded first place in running high jump August 29, 1904. Designed and manufactured by Mermod & Jaccard Jewelry Company, St. Louis. MHS; Gift of James Stephens
DESCRIPTION
Although a wide range of sports defined the 1904 Olympic competitions, track and field events comprised most of the “official” events. Unlike in later Olympics, athletes competed on behalf of their local amateur athletic clubs, rather than national sports federations. The United States’ star athletes were Ray Ewry and Harry Hillman of the New York Athletic Club, Archie Hahn of Milwaukee Athletic Club, and Jim Lightbody of the Chicago Athletic Association. Together this group of four men won 23 of 25 gold medals and swept 20 events. S. S. Jones of the New York Athletic Club earned this first place trophy in the running high jump event August 29, 1904. Designed and manufactured by Mermod & Jaccard Jewelry Company of St. Louis, the loving cup was donated by J. A. Holmes. Jones’s winning jump was 5 feet and 11 inches a little shy of the Olympic record of 6 feet and 2 4/5 inches. Winning the silver in the event was G. P. Serviss of Cornell University and placing third was Paul Weinstein of Germany.
