Starkloff, Colleen Starkloff, Max, 1937- A2538 9.5 Cubic Feet (10 boxes) 1977-2002 Processing Information Processed by Lizzie Griesedieck, 2007. Donor Information The papers were donated by Max Starkloff in 2005. Biographical Sketch Max Starkloff was born in St. Louis in 1937, the son of Carl and Hertha Starkloff. After a disabling automobile accident at the age of 21, Starkloff lived with his mother for four years, and then moved to a nursing home, the only option for people with severe disabilities at that time. During the twelve years he lived at the nursing home, Starkloff set out to make the necessary changes so that he and others with disabilities could live an independent life. In 1970, Starkloff co-founded Paraquad with Colleen, whom he would marry in 1975. Paraquad is an independent living center that continues to provide services and advocacy for people with disabilities. In 2003, Starkloff and his wife left Paraquad to establish the Starkloff Disability Institute. The Starkloffs continue their work to change societal attitudes about people with disabilities and to fully integrate people with disabilities. Scope and Contents The collection contains correspondence and records of Max Starkloff and his wife Colleen in regards to their work with Paraquad on behalf of people with disabilities, including letters exchanged between Max and Congressman Richard Gephardt, speeches of Max, press clippings, corporate records of Paraquad with organizational structure and financial information, photographs, and information regarding a trip of the Starkloffs to Japan.
