Donor Information Records were donated by John Howard Merle in August 2000. Historical Sketch Edward F. Howard operated a livery stable at 423 S. 12th Street in St. Louis in 1890. Edward's sons eventually joined the business and the firm became known as Edward F. Howard and Sons, undertakers, and later Howard Funeral Home. In 1918 the business was located at 3226 Park; it later moved to 4212 St. Louis Ave; and from the mid-1940s to the mid-1970s, it was located at 1619 S. Grand. Edward F. Howard died December 11, 1939. Scope and Contents Collection contains six account books, dated 1894-1938, and nine record books of funerals, dated 1913-1975. Funeral records in these latter volumes contain the decedent's name, age, date of death, place of death, place of interment, and other information. Collection contains other material relating to the operation of the funeral home. Arrangement The collection is arranged by type of material. Separated Materials Photograph of Henry Severeid (wearing a St. Louis baseball uniform) was found in between pages 74 and 75 of Volume 8, and was transferred to the Photographs and Prints Department.
