Biographical Sketch Sam Breadon, a son of Irish immigrants, was the president and owner of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball club from 1920 to 1947. During his tenure, the team won nine National League pennants and six world championships. In 1917, Breadon, a Ford automobile dealer in St. Louis, first became involved in the baseball business when he invested $200 in the stock of the local baseball club. Over time, his investment increased to $20,000. He was asked to become the president of the organization in January 1920. As early as 1932, he became one of the first advocates for night baseball games. At age 71, he sold his interests in the Cardinals to Robert E. Hannegan and Fred M. Saigh, Jr., for over $3,000,000. He died at St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis of cancer on May 10, 1949, and his ashes were scattered over the Mississippi River per his request.
