Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are invaluable at the Missouri History Museum. We have various opportunities for people 16 years of age and older who can make a difference by lending a hand at our institution. Those responsibilities may include support in the following areas. Become a Volunteer (PDF form).
Library - Volunteers are needed in the Library to keep the facility organized by reshelving books and periodicals, photocopying requested reference materials, reading and writing brief reports on books, and, most important, fulfilling any duty as assigned. Tasks can vary daily. At times, foreign language translators are needed to transcribe documents as well.
Research - Volunteers in this area are expected to provide methodical investigation into a requested topic by utilizing the references available for the project. (This volunteer position is on an as-needed basis.)
Visitor Services - Volunteers in this area must enjoy working with the public. Responsibilities vary, but the most important thing is to make sure that our visitors have a quality experience. Ticket taking, monitoring exhibit galleries, answering phones, assisting visitors with directions, and staffing public programs are some of the tasks of the MHM Visitor Services volunteer.
Special Events - Volunteers in the Special Events area have various responsibilities, such as working as greeters, program monitors, registration assistants, surveyors, and ushers. Other tasks could be requested depending on the nature of the program.
Membership Volunteer - Volunteer and Membership Services Volunteers in these two areas provide valuable assistance by performing clerical tasks, data entry (especially when possessing computer skills), filing, photocopying, and by preparing for large mailings.
Collections - Volunteers in the Collections area, assist with the cleaning, storing, housing, and cataloging of artifacts and archival materials. On-the-job training is required.
Docents - Volunteers in this area learn how to give tours as well as lend support to educational and public programs. Volunteers that become a part of the MHM Docent Corps are required to participate in a training program that consists of 36 hours. Training classes take place annually in June.
