Author Guidelines - Books

Missouri History Museum welcomes submissions for manuscripts that fit the mission of the institution: The Museum seeks to produce works that illuminate the history of the region in a manner that raises consciousness of contemporary issues and provokes discussion of the region's future. Although the focus is usually on the history of Missouri and often St. Louis, our book genres range from scholarly history to memoir to historical fiction to guidebook.

The editor generally responds to queries within three months. Often, we ask the author to fill out an author proposal form, which helps us determine marketability. If a manuscript shows promise, a formal proposal is submitted to the Director of Publications, then to the President's Office. If a book is accepted for publication, a production schedule will be agreed upon.

Authors are expected to supply images for the book, take care of all necessary permissions, and write photo captions. As the manuscript is being edited, authors will be queried and sometimes asked for revisions. Authors see the edited text in its designed galley pages and make final checks at that point. The production process, from contract signing to publication, usually takes 12 months or more.

Queries are welcome by e-mail. Manuscripts and a one- to two-paragraph abstract should be submitted via email (preferable) or via mail to:

We are able to read most word processing programs, although Microsoft Word is preferred. Style should follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition. Endnote style must adhere to the Chicago Manual as well. We will happily return any manuscript that we do not use if you enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.
