Thomas Jefferson was surrounded by his family and about 140 enslaved people who lived and worked at his Monticello plantation in Virginia’s Piedmont. Susan R. Stein, the Richard Gilder Senior Curator and Vice President of Museum Programs at Monticello, describes Jefferson’s life and the lives of his daughters, grandchildren, and the enslaved people who, he wrote, “labor for my happiness.”
