As athletes and fans prepare for this summer’s Olympics in London, the Missouri History Museum looks back at the first time the Games came to the United States. St. Louis celebrated more than the World’s Fair in 1904; it also celebrated its role as the first American city to host the modern Olympics. The St. Louis Games looked a bit different than what will be seen in London, but in many ways the same athleticism and spirit can be found in the photographs and stories from 1904. Our Olympics, located in theBank of America Atrium, explains St. Louis important role in Olympic history and explores the differences and similarities with today’s Games. Visitors can view a number of photographs from the Museum’s collection as well as read the stories that made the St. Louis Games unique and sometimes controversial.
