Réginald Auger, Laval University (Canada), discusses 20 years of archaeological research at the Loyola sugar plantation operated by the Jesuits in French Guiana from 1665 until their expulsion in 1763. Here, up to 500 slaves labored to produce a number of cash crops under the close supervision of a handful of missionaries.
