Veiled Prophet Collection
Unique to St. Louis, the Veiled Prophet organization began in the late 19th century as a businessmen's celebration of commerce combined with a private membership group. It evolved to include a ball with a Queen of Love and Beauty and her court, became democratized to include a parade with themed floats, and further evolved into a popular fair. Over the years, the Veiled Prophet organization has provided the Missouri History Museum with many examples of its member gifts. There is also a good collection of early queens' gowns and attendants' gowns and accessories. The museum's art collection includes a substantial number of watercolor drawings illustrating ideas for Veiled Prophet parade floats throughout the years.
