Methods in Historical Research: Charles Lindbergh (LRC Program)

Dates Available: This program is offered all school year on Mondays through Thursdays, with limited availability.

Grade Level: This program is available for 6th–12th grades only.

Minimum Number of Students: 10 students

Maximum Number of Students: 28 students

Program Duration: 1.5 hours; available only before 12pm

Location: This program is conducted at the Library and Research Center at 225 S. Skinker Blvd. 

This experience guides students in the comprehension and analysis of rare primary-source documents related to Charles Lindbergh and the Spirit of St. Louis. Through decoding contemporaneous recollections, diaries, and newspaper articles from St. Louis and around the world students are able to understand this historic flight through the eyes of early 20th century people.

Students will discover and analyze two different aspects of Charles Lindbergh: Lindbergh the man (the facts of his life, career, and family) and Lindbergh the myth (the way the public has chosen to memorialize parts of his life and career). Students will compare and contrast the realities of Lindbergh’s life and accomplishments with the legend he has become. They'll evaluate what information is most important to remember, how perspectives on history can differ, and why it's important to learn the whole history of an event or person.

About the Program
At the start of the program, students will learn about what the Library and Research Center is and how it's used by the public. Throughout the rest of the program, students will think critically about the ways we can use primary-source documents to find out information about the people and places of the past. They'll also compare and contrast these methods of historical research to the ways in which they gather information in their own lives.

Critical Thinking
Regardless of which field trip experience you choose, all of our programs are designed to emphasize the critical thinking skills students use in museums, the classroom, and as lifelong learners. These big goals drive our program creation, our staff training, and our program evaluation for a holistic and outcome-driven approach.

For all K–12 programs we strive to create and facilitate experiences in which learners will individually and collaboratively use Museum spaces, objects, and content to:

  • compare and contrast the past and present
  • make connections between the people, places, and stories of history and their personal experience
  • comprehend and evaluate multiple perspectives and past choices
  • express and support their own perspectives on history

Program Modifications
We understand that there are many factors that may cause your bus to be late. However, due to other group reservations and the schedules of our Museum Educators, we can't extend the length of your visit past your reservation time. If you arrive late, we'll do our best to still deliver the program you reserved; however, modifications may be necessary depending on your arrival time. For groups that are excessively late, significant changes to your program will be necessary.
