The James W. Fitzgibbon Papers comprise two separate donations. In December 1997, Fitzgibbon’s wife, Margaret, donated a paper model of the Field of Cloth of Gold constructed by Fitzgibbon, thirteen boxes of slides, and four films related to Fitzgibbon’s work. In April 1999, following Margaret's death, the balance of the collection was donated to the Missouri Historical Society via her estate. The donation included Fitzgibbon’s notebooks, sketchbooks, original artwork, blueprints, and drawings. Additionally, Fitzgibbon’s files on his business interests, his academic career, and his friend and business partner, R. Buckminster Fuller, were also included. Much of Margaret’s personal correspondence, papers, and artwork were also part of the second donation.
